SmartPortfolio: blockchain certification of academic degrees and credentials against fraud deployed on ISBE

SmartPortfolio, a platform that certifies academic degrees and documents through blockchain registration.
The concept is simple yet powerful: converting each degree into a digital asset controlled by the graduate, directly connecting universities, students, employers and recruiters without any intermediaries. Today, it operates in Spain, Morocco and the Caribbean, collaborating with more than 20 institutions, including UC3M, UIB, Nebrija, UDIT, UTAMED and the Caribbean Examinations Council, and adheres to the W3C Verifiable Credentials standard of EBSI.
A key challenge in education
This solution addresses a fundamental issue. Academic accreditation still heavily relies on paper, slow and costly processes, and manual verifications that leave the door open to fraud, as 30 per cent of LinkedIn profiles contain fake or exaggerated academic credentials. The current context does not help to mitigate this problem, given that online higher education is growing at 13 per cent annually, three times faster than the rest of the sector, and by 2030, 23 per cent of students are expected to have had some international mobility experience. Verifying degrees across borders quickly and reliably is no longer a detail, it is a necessity.
This is how it works in practice: SmartPortfolio registers degrees on ISBE, digitally signed by the issuing institution, and the student can always carry them in an app available on the App Store and Google Play. Each registry includes its blockchain hash, transaction hash and verification token, allowing an employer or an institution to verify its authenticity instantly and free of charge. If they wish, students can share it directly on LinkedIn or other professional networks.
Technically, the platform relies on a multi-blockchain architecture, including Polygon, Alastria Quorum and ISBE, and is compatible with the European Digital Identity Wallet, whose interoperability across the 27 Member States is planned from 2026. Through integration APIs, it also connects with human resources platforms, social networks and university systems.
The integration of SmartPortfolio into ISBE is a concrete example of how blockchain infrastructure can resolve a real and widespread problem, the falsification and verification of academic credentials, connecting institutions, students and employers under a single trust standard, without intermediaries or friction between countries.
