MIL – Madrid Innovation Lab: Blockchain and Sustainability

The Roundtable on Blockchain and Sustainability at MIL – Madrid Innovation Lab is a key session within Madrid Tech Week, organized by the Blockchain and Digital Transformation Clusters Madrid, with the support of Alastria Blockchain Ecosystem, to reflect on how blockchain can drive a sustainable, efficient, and responsible transition.
The session will feature Miguel Ángel Domínguez Castellano, President of Alastria, who will deliver a brief introduction to ISBE, along with Daniela Corredor, COO of Alastria, who will present and moderate the discussion, highlighting the importance of connecting innovation, sustainability, and public-private collaboration.
On this occasion, three leading voices from the ecosystem will showcase how they apply blockchain in projects with real-world impact:
Marcos Carrera (Fujitsu) will present the BePlastic project, a blockchain-based solution for the registration and traceability of plastic waste, enabling the measurement, verification, and certification of its lifecycle to ensure more efficient, circular management aligned with environmental sustainability goals.
Almudena de la Mata (PhD, Max Planck Institute–University of Hamburg) (Blockchain Intelligence) will present the DivAirCity Horizon 2020 EU-funded project (GA number 101003799), a social innovation platform that strengthens transparency and trust in social impact initiatives across several European cities, ensuring citizen participation in achieving ESG objectives and enabling real-time accountability.
Cruz Guijarro Herrero (UniPimus) will showcase a municipal-level waste management solution used to measure, verify, and audit separation and recycling data, promoting reliable metrics and helping organizations move toward more responsible, evidence-based management.
The roundtable aims to discuss blockchain’s role as an enabler of sustainability, and how emerging regulatory frameworks, transparency requirements, and evolving citizen behavior are reshaping how organizations assume their environmental and social commitments.
